Your Governors –
Who are we and what do we do?
The SNCC Governing Body is comprised of a group of volunteers from within the school and from the local community. There are currently 17 governors and 2 associate governors. They form a team working hand-in hand with the staff, pupils and parents of the school. The role of the governing body is often defined as that of a “critical friend” – there to support and celebrate the school’s successes and to challenge areas of underperformance. Governors are ultimately responsible for how the school is performing.
Governors support and challenge the Principal by gathering views, asking questions and deciding what's best for the school. They are not there to rubber stamp decisions. They have to be prepared to give and take and be loyal to decisions taken by the governing body as a whole.
Governors gather their information on the school in a variety of ways including; talking to staff, pupils and parents both formally and informally; monitoring visits to the different faculties in the school; Principal reports and attending RAP meetings. Following a recent climate change survey it was recognised that the governors could do still more to improve the levels of communication between staff and governors. To that end, governors now hold an open session to meet staff on Friday lunchtimes every fortnight. All views, negative and positive, and all conversations are treated as confidential, unless otherwise agreed. In addition, 2 further members of staff have recently been appointed as associate governors.
Minutes of all Governors meetings are available from the College on request.
